Of course all reading is subjective, but I found "On the Highway", by Francesca Forrest, a perfect short story. It surprised me, and moved me. The imagery was so vivid and precise.

It takes places New Year's Eve, but really, can be read at any time, the fantastical element subtly and seamlessly worked in.

Over here, a short, tightly written story set in Kerr's urban fantasy version of San Francisco. She's written four books about Nola O'Grady, her noir detective with license to ensorcell. This, I think, serves as a splendid introduction to those.

I've been enjoying Black Gate's latest issue, #14, which is nearly as big as a regular book, at just under 400 pages--magazine size. What's more, the three novellas are printed at a slightly smaller font, though so clearly at first I didn't even notice, and I've been having trouble seeing small print at night unless the light is very bright ( Read more... )
